TIG welding

How to weld vertical-up with TIG

Quick answer

Vertical-up tig welding: drop 10–20% current, point slightly upward into the pool, and use a weave or triangle pattern to let each shelf freeze before the next. Gravity fights you — beat it with less heat and more rhythm.

Technique

Set up: 10–20% under your flat-position amps. Angle the torch/rod 5–10° upward. For MIG/TIG, a slight side-to-side weave; for stick, a triangle or 'Christmas tree' pattern. Pause at the edges so the toes wet in; don't dwell mid-bead or it sagged. The mantra: let the shelf freeze, climb onto it, repeat.
