Laser — strengths and trade-offs
Handheld laser welding (fiber laser welding): a fiber laser beam melts a narrow, deep seam — 3–5x faster than TIG with minimal heat input and almost no cleanup. Best for production speed, stainless benches, sheet metal. Gas: nitrogen or argon at 15–25 L/min. Difficulty: the easiest process to produce clean beads with — but the most dangerous to eyes.
- No rated laser safety eyewear for the exact wavelength — regular welding helmets do NOT block 1064–1080 nm
- Skipping the focal/protective lens check — spatter destroys optics fast
- Expecting them to weld thick structural steel: most handhelds are comfortable to ~4–6 mm
TIG — strengths and trade-offs
TIG welding (GTAW — Gas tungsten Arc Welding): a non-consumable tungsten electrode arcs under pure argon while you hand-feed filler rod. Best for stainless steel, aluminium, thin material. Gas: pure argon (100%). Difficulty: the hardest common process to master — both hands and one foot.
- Dipping the tungsten into the pool — contaminating the electrode and the weld
- Too much torch angle: 10–15° from vertical is plenty
- Forgetten post-flow gas: tungsten oxidises and turns black as it cools
